Request DocumentsCommon questions about the WHOIS protocol and domain/IP data search.
WHOIS returns public registration data for a domain or IP address. This includes the registrar's name, creation and expiration dates, domain status, and owner contact details (unless hidden by privacy settings).
Due to GDPR regulations and registrar privacy policies (Privacy Protection), personal data of domain administrators (name, email, phone) is often replaced by technical contacts of the hosting provider. This is a legal practice to prevent spam.
Our scanner operates in Direct Lookup mode. This means we don't use outdated local databases but instead make a direct request via TCP port 43 to official regional internet registry servers (RIPE, ARIN, APNIC) and root domain servers.
Engineers use WHOIS to analyze domain age (new domains are often used for phishing), identify owners of suspicious IP networks during DDoS attacks, and verify the delegation chain of NS servers when auditing corporate infrastructure.
